An Offering to Jobu

In the movie Major League (1989), Pedro Cerrano constructs an alter for Jobu, with the expectation that he will take the fear of the curve ball from his bats. In one scene, a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken is brought into the locker room, and his teammates apologize that they could not deliver a live chicken for the sacrificial offering. My family has seen the movie dozens of times, and we often quote memorable lines. There are several great clips are on YouTube.

When I interviewed for a job recently, my mom constructed an offering to Jobu. She arranged some of my favorite items, along with my personalized cloth napkin and a whole chicken. Obviously, it worked. How else could I have been selected for the position?

Domino’s BreadBowl Pasta

I just received an e-mail from Domnio’s Pizza about their new bread bowl pasta products. I wasn’t aware of this menu item, but it sounds like crack cocaine sprinkled on top of a delicious bowl of heroin — sure it’s feels good, but coming down is a bitch. One assumes.

I’m going to call up and ask if they have a lo-carb version.

Last week, a friend tweeted about a hilarious Internet meme based on the McCain campaign gimmick called “Joe the Plumber.” Their idea was to fool working-class voters into thinking that their tax plan would benefit them — the tradesman or small business owner. To support the scheme, the McCain-Palin 2008 website offers a web form allowing a visitor to request his or her own personalized rally sign. This proved far too tempting for clever readers of FARK.com and Wonkette. I couldn’t resist creating my own, and preserving the best from others.

I’m late in blogging about this tidbit, but I only just heard about it from a podcast. The short of it is that the American Family Association’s site OneNewsNow does a search-and-replace on the word “gay” for “homosexual.” There is an olympic hopeful with the last name Gay. Hilarity ensues.

It appears that
Right Wing Watch was the first to report the gaff. I’m also linking to an article by
Autumn Sandeen because it’s good stuff.
